A vibrant Â鶹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø community of about 20,000 people, Newton was founded in 1871 as the Santa Fe Railroad chugged westward across the plains and cowboys drove cattle up the Chisholm Trail from Texas. Newton's early years as a cow town were brief but rowdy. Though the cowboys soon moved further down the trail, the railroad continued to shape the town as Mennonite immigrants from Germany and the Ukraine, including Bernard Warkentin, helped establish Newton as an important influence in Â鶹´«Ã½¹ÙÍø' agricultural future. Today, Newton and neighboring North Newton features an active arts community, three National Historic Districts, a variety of museums, restaurants, shops and attractions, Bethel College, a championship golf course, first-class convention center and many other amenities. Newton is also an Amtrak-served community.
